Carrara Marble Tour

Your excursion to Carrara’s famed marble quarries will begin with a private transfer from your accommodation to the village of Colonnata, where your Land Rover Defender (8+1 seats), will be waiting for you.

Your private guide will then take you on a rumbling ride up the Apuane Mountains, reaching 1000 meters in altitude to visit the highest quarries, which have been revered since Roman times for the incomparable and valuable marbles they yield.

As you tour the active quarries, you’ll learn about the extraction and processing of exquisite Carrara Marble and hear tales of how marbles cut from these very caves were used to build the Pantheon and Trajan’s Column in Ancient Rome. You’ll also learn about the legendary artists who have taken their chisels to Carrara marble, including Michelangelo. With a quick break for an ice-cold glass of Prosecco, you’ll then head inside a spectacular underground quarry, and witness today’s marble workers, affectionately called Carrarini, hard at work, and learn about their daily routines in the quarries. Afterward, you’ll enjoy a tasting of Lardo di Colonnata, unique pork lard traditionally cured in the marble caves.
